Bed bugs hide wherever people sit or sleep for long stretches. They want to stay close to their next meal, come out to feed, and get back into hiding before you notice. Use this checklist to know where to look.
Bedroom
- Headboard, especially the back side and where it attaches to the wall
- Bed frame joints and screw holes
- Mattress seams, edges, corners, and tags
- Between the mattress and the mattress topper
- Box spring, especially under the fabric on the bottom
- Nightstands and the baseboards behind the bed
Living room
- Recliners, including the footrest and the moving parts underneath
- Couch seams, cushions, and the frame under the cushions
- Throw blankets and pillows left on the couch
Office and game room
- Office chairs, especially fabric seats and the seams underneath
- Gaming chairs and any seating used for hours at a time
Use your phone’s flashlight. You’re looking for live bugs, tiny white eggs, shed skins, and small black “pepper” spots.
Why recliners are a favorite
Recliners are the second most common piece of furniture we treat, after beds. People sit in them for hours watching movies and shows, which gives bed bugs plenty of time to come out, feed, and hide again. Their next meal is never far away.
If you don’t react much to bites, a recliner can host bed bugs for a long time before anyone notices.
How the couch spreads bed bugs through the house
The couch is often the center point that carries bed bugs to the rest of the home. Here’s a common story we hear:
- A friend or relative hangs out on the couch or sleeps over on it.
- Bed bugs from their belongings settle into the couch.
- The family gathers there for movie nights over the next few weeks.
- Blankets and stuffed animals are shared and left on the couch.
- Bed bugs crawl into those items and get carried into the bedrooms.
By the time bites show up in the bedrooms, the problem has already spread.
Can bed bugs live in a mattress topper?
Yes. Toppers have seams and folds, and the gap between the topper and the mattress is dark and close to you all night. Check both the topper and the mattress under it.
